  Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a potent neuroprotectant required for survival of retinal neurons. Studies have shown that there is significant reduction in BDNF in patients with eye diseases and this contributes to the degeneration of the retinal cells.

  Over the last decade there had been many scientific researches around the world which showed how BDNF neuroprotection plays an important role in the protection of the retinal cells from damage when its subjected to injury.

  Neurotrophins helps to provide the required neuroprotection which prevents death of the ganglion cells in the retina.

  Photoreceptors, especially cones, have high energy demands, making them vulnerable to metabolic stress. Metabolic dysfunction of photoreceptors and their supporting retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is an important underlying cause of degenerative retinal diseases.

• Improves ocular blood flow

  Reduction in ocular blood flow leads to unstable ocular perfusion and many research studies have shown that in many eye diseases there is reduced ocular blood flow and perfusion. Vascular dysregulation seems to be cause of this reduced ocular blood flow.

  Vascular dysregulation refers to a condition where there is inappropriate constriction or insufficient dilation of the micro vasculature in response to irritation like cold provocation or emotional stress.

  People who suffer from vascular dysregulation often experience variant degrees of migraine, cold extremities, and low blood pressure. Vascular dysregulation has been reported to be a risk factor for many eye diseases, especially open angle glaucoma.

  Vascular dysregulation means that blood flow is not properly flowing. This causes reduced and unstable oxygen supply to the tissues in the eyes. This in turn causes a cascade of events causing ocular inflammation, reduced outflow of metabolic waste and atrophy of the retinal cells.

  Vision loss in glaucoma is not only associated with elevated intraocular pressure and neurodegeneration, but vascular dysregulation is also a major factor.

  Ocular inflammation is another important condition which can cause retinal tissue damage and cell dysfunction, leading to ocular disease and vision loss. Controlled inflammatory responses are necessary to heal an injury, however over-activated inflammation is the grounds for many ocular diseases.

  Retinal degenerative diseases that result in chronic inflammation accelerate retinal tissue destruction and vision loss. The most chronic retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and uveitis, are underlined by retinal inflammation, which contributes to vision impairment and/or loss.

  Glaucoma is associated with toxic inflammatory factors leading to cell death and disease progression. Trabecular meshwork dysfunction is likely mediated by oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. Ocular surface inflammation may compromise the cornea, conjunctiva and the trabecular meshwork.

  Excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and neuro-inflammation have the ability to influence one another in a self-sustaining manner, thus functioning as a “neurotoxic triad.”

  Recent evidence has shown ocular inflammation as a prominent role for underlying pathogenesis of a wide range of retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinitis pigmentosa, and has suggested a role for anti-inflammatory therapies to potentially alter the severity and course of these eye disorders.

  Inflammation underpins and contributes to the pathogenesis of many retinal degenerative diseases.

• Reduces oxidative stress

  Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body. Ocular disease forms when the oxidative stress exceed the capacity of the antioxidant and repair system.

  Oxidative stress plays a prominent role in the pathogenesis of many degenerative diseases of the retina, such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinitis pigmentosa.

  Oxidative stress damage is an important factor in development of glaucoma, which triggers trabecular meshwork degeneration, which then leads to intraocular hypertension.

  Different studies provide cumulating evidence, which supports the association of oxidative stress with different aspects of the neurodegenerative process happening in glaucoma.

  Research evidence shows that treatments with antioxidants have shown to protect the retinal tissues by combating the oxidative stress.

  An imbalance between defensive antioxidant and free radicals in the body causes oxidative stress which can lead to ocular inflammation.

  Consultations can be scheduled remotely through a video call however all therapies require the patient to be available at our clinic.

• What Is the Length of Treatment?

  The duration of the treatment varies with the severity of the condition. You would know the length of the treatment after the consultation.

• How Long Do I Have Stay in Clinic When I Come for Treatment?

  You would be required to stay at the clinic between two to three hours for various therapies.

• When Do I Start to See Improvements?

  Most patients see improvements in their visual acuity, color perception in about 7 days of therapy.

• Will My Eyes Be Dilated During Consultation?

  No. We do not use any dilating medications.

• Will you accept my medical health insurance for NRT treatment?

  Holistic eye treatments are not covered by your medical health insurance including Medicare and Medicaid.
